The Southeast Missouri Medical Center, Inc. (SMMC) group donated $6,000,000 to build a community center for the citizens of Jackson. Also, the Clark family made a substantial contribution of land on which to build the project. A ¼ cent sales tax was passed by the citizens of Jackson in November of 2012. Revenue from this tax is used to cover operational cost of the new center.
On January 10, 1966, a corporation was formed, known as Southeast Missouri Medical Center, Inc. The charter members were Garland Powell, Arnold Strickert, C.J. Fritz Brenecke, Albert Lowes, Robert Hartle, Bernard Shaper and Paul Mueller Jr. In 1967, the board established a committee to explore purchasing land for the medical facility. Over $180,000 was donated by the local citizens and businesses for this project.
