Municipal Band

Each Thursday evening at 7 pm during the summer months, the Jackson Municipal Band provides free weekly concerts for area citizens and visitors. The band also provides a venue for various talented individuals in our community by featuring a special guest performance at each of their weekly programs. The band's summer schedule also includes concerts for various community activities such as Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Homecomers. Visit the Jackson Municipal Band online and check out their summer schedule.

The Jackson Municipal Band was established in 1920 when the Jackson Chamber of Commerce asked A.W. Roloff to start a community band. Members practiced in Mr. Roloff's woodworking shop, using sawhorses for benches. The gazebo on the Cape Girardeau courthouse grounds was completed in 1932 and served as a stage for the group until the dedication of the City Park Band Shell in July, 1976. The Jackson Municipal Band has had nine conductors: A.W. Roloff, Leroy Mason, Ed Carson, Richard Partridge, Linton Luetje, Alan Roland, Jim Rhodes, Nick Leist, and currently, Scott Vangilder.

Band members vary in age from 16 to 75; membership is open to anyone in the community, based on instrumentation, ability, and positions available. Inquiries about membership and special guests should be directed to the conductor, Scott Vangilder.

When the band shell is not in use by the Jackson Municipal Band, it is available for other community functions and public use. Please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 573-204-8848 regarding reservation of the band shell. Other inquiries can be directed to any band board member.
